Registration

Registration is open now: https://forms.gle/XX4bWtSpegU7G46s7

First round of invites go out mid-January. Potential entrants will have 2 weeks to accept. Second round of invites go out early February. If 32 players cannot be found, 16 players will be invited and the game count will be adjusted (still 12 hanchan per person, but 4 games instead of 3 per set, timing +90 minutes). Can't make it or too intimidated? No worries! We will have our usual PML Riichi Mahjong Open around early October give or take a week or two.

$220 + tax - Individual Registration

After filling out the form, if you are chosen, you will receive a link to pay. Once payment happens, you will be officially registered. Tickets are non-refundable. Transfers can only be to someone at the top of the waiting list.

Format

  • Saikouisen Rules (10/30 uma, no red 5s)
  • Group set timing. Every 3 hanchans will have approximately 4 hours to complete. Each hanchan will have 75 minutes to complete. If there is any additional time, add it to the next hanchan. A hand is started as soon as ron/tsumo/tenpai/noten/chombo is called from the previous hand.
  • When time is up, finish the current hand and the next hand. Each table should keep track of their own time.
  • Set play - you will play the same players for each cut.
  • RO32: Top 2 advances at each table to 1st bracket. Bottom 2 at each table move to 2nd bracket.
  • RO16: Top 2 advances at each 1st bracket table to new 1st bracket. Bottom 2 at each 1st bracket mix and play top 2 at each 2nd bracket table for this new 2nd bracket. Bottom 2 of each table in the 2nd bracket move to a 3rd bracket.
  • RO8: Top 2 advances at each 1st bracket table and make the finals table to play for 1st & 2nd. Bottom 2 at each 1st bracket table mix and play top 2 at each 2nd bracket table to play for 5th & 8th. Bottom 2 at each 2nd bracket table mix and play the top 2 at each 3rd bracket table to play for 17th & 20th. Bottom 2 at each 3rd bracket table play for 29th & 30nd.
  • Points are reset after every cut.
  • For the 3rd hanchan in each set, east will be the current 4th place, south will be the current 3rd place, west will be the current 2nd place, and north will be the current 1st place in overall standings for that table.
  • tl;dr get 1st or 2nd to advance in each set. Aim for 1st in your final set.

Venue

The tournament will be held at the Pacific Mahjong League at 39352 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538.  We have at least 8 automatic tables and plenty of room to play. Unfortunately, the City of Fremont does not allow prizes or anything of value to be given out.

A wide variety of food is available nearby, and we share 35 spots of parking with the other businesses in the building.

To keep everyone safe, for this tournament only, everyone entering MUST be vaccinated to participate (2 plus a booster). Your vaccination card will be checked at the door. Please join us for future events if this is not possible. We also ask that everyone playing adheres to the current mask policy at the time of the event. At the time of this post, masks are encouraged (12/23/22), and this policy will be updated as the local policy changes. If you sit at a table with a player who requests you wear a mask for that hanchan, we will have disposable masks available if you do not have your own.

Scoring

Hands will be recorded into the live scoring system as they are played.  One or more players at each table will be responsible for recording the hands using our mobile web app.  All players are encouraged to use the app to verify hands are scored properly.  There will be an opportunity to learn about the app during registration at 9:30 AM. During play mobile phones should not be used except for the purposes of scoring.

Tables

Eight AMOS Rexx automatic mahjong tables will be made available for play. All automatic tables will be configured to deal hands and flip the dora.  The Rexx tables will show points in the drawers automatically.  Please verify your points recorded after every hand.  In the event of a point discrepancy, the points listed on the web app will be used.

Food

Due to the wide selection of food available nearby, food will not be provided as part of the tournament registration.  Water will be provided to all players.

Etiquette

Players are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner.  Please respect the concentration of other players during play.  Elbows, food, and drinks are not allowed on the tables.  Move your walls forward so that everyone can reach the tiles.  Do not slam or throw tiles on to the table.  Do not reveal tiles in the wall after the hand has ended. After your table finishes and the points are verified, please leave the playing area and go outside if you wish to chat.

Cheating, repeated tardiness, or creating issues that affect the well-being of the tournament, will warrant disqualification.

Side Events

Friday the day before the event will be a practice day for anyone who chooses to try out the Amos Rexx tables and/or finish registration for the website for scoring purposes. PML will be open in the evening around 7 pm till maybe 10 or 11 pm, depending on participation. Your registration includes this practice time. Other members may choose to show up for this event at the usual rate.

After each day, feel free to stick around for more free play. This is included in the ticket. Other members may choose to show up for free play at the usual rate.

Additional Information

Attendees are advised that we will be taking pictures and recording video of this event, and player's first and last names will be released when sharing tournament placements. Table one will be streaming to https://twitch.tv/pacificml both days.
